The life and times of Deborah Spake

Greeting

Howdy!

The premiere of “The Baker’s Oven” - my directorial debut in NYC at the Manhattan Repertory Theater wrapped up last week and all in all I was proud of the actors work as well as the postive connections made with the theater company and some of the other artists who worked produced work in the festival.  I am now in the exciting process of casting my summer project.  Presently holding auditions in Rochester, NY for the premiere of a new Environmental Musical - produced by Peace Child International and performing in Rochester and touring to Quebec, Canada as part of the World Youth Congress 2008.   We have had a wonderful turn out of talent - from age 9 to 22.  It will be a challenge to choose between these great young performers.   It is truly inspiring to see the heart, intelligence and clarity of purpose as well as values in our blossoming ‘future leaders’.

Hello Waking World!

I am very excited to join the inter-web with my first blog! I was inspired to create this because I am hoping to reconnect with some old friends. As a youth I traveled to the Soviet Union with a touring production called Peace Child. I started out getting involved locally in Berkeley and San Francisco working directly with David Woolecombe, the local Marin chapter and the chorus that supported the first international tour of 1986. I later was in the chorus supporting the Central American tour (’88). In 1987 -I applied and was accepted into a touring cast. I traveled with the Peace Child Boston/U.S.S.R. Tour in and visited Moscow, Leningrad, Rostov-on-don, Sochi, and Yerevan. The following summer of 1988 I traveled to Kazakhstan and then in 1989 to Latvia. Peace Child International opened my eyes to other cultures and ideas; to seeing different people as human beings and that no matter what our politics or nationality—in our hearts we all want the same things and we all want peace. I made so many friends that I will never forget. Unfortunately, so much time has passed that many of the phone numbers and addresses are no longer accurate. I hope that through this blog I will create a living magnet for other Peace Child alumni to find each other. There are two companion sites I can refer alumni to and that is Abigail Garner’s Website (Kazakhstan Tour) and Debbie Snyder’s Peace Child Alumni Yahoo Group (Boston/USSR 1987 Tour). So, to all my old friends and Peace Child alumni, please Reach Out and say “hello”.
